The National Council on Teacher Quality was in Oakland on Wednesday to release the findings of their year-long study on the policies and practices impacting effective teaching in the Oakland Unified School District.

The report, commissioned by several Oakland community organizations, delves into issues of staffing, teacher evaluation, tenure and compensation, among other issues, and offers specific recommendations for Oakland. Just a few of the report’s suggestions: Teachers in Oakland should be paid more, have fewer sick days and be evaluated more often. Read the full report here.

The National Council on Teacher Quality, a non-partisan organization based in New York City, conducts studies after being hired by community organizations and with the cooperation of the district. A similar teacher study was conducted of Los Angeles Unified in 2011.

The Oakland report has been met with skepticism by some, including the Oakland teachers’ union, according to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle that detailed the lengthy report.
